Description

Key Characters:

Growth Form: Decumbent perennial herbs 1–5 dm tall.

Stems: Rhizomes 0.5–1 cm in diameter, slightly enlarged and adventitiously rooting at the nodes.

Roots:

Leaves: Leaves simple. Alternate, confined to the ascending portion of stem. Blades elliptic to ovate, 4–8(–10) cm long, (1.5–)2–4 cm wide, midrib impressed on upper surface, slightly raised on lower surface. Apex acuminate. Base attenuate. Upper surfaces dark green; lower surfaces somewhat paler. Margins entire. Veins parallel. Petioles 1.5–3 cm long (incl. sheath), flaring to a sheath 0.5–1 cm long, the sheath glabrous or sparsely pubescent. Stipules absent.

Flowers: Flowers few to numerous in loose spikes 5–15 cm long, glabrous to densely pubescent throughout, each flower subtended by a narrowly ovate, channeled, 1–3–nerved bract 1.2–2 cm long, margins entire to rarely finely serrulate. Flowers bisexual (perfect). Sepals: dorsal sepal ascending, pale green to greenish yellow, ovate, 5–8 mm long, glabrous or sparsely pubescent, lateral sepals partly connate, closely enclosing base of labellum, pale green to yellowish green, ovate to oblong–ovate, 6–8 mm long, glabrous. lateral petals appressed to the dorsal sepal, ascending, greenish yellow, +/- unequally ovate, 4–6 mm long, glabrous; labellum horizontal or slightly ascending, pale to bright yellow, 9–12mm long, base divided into 2 spurs, each containing a single unstalked gland, middle part of lip convoluted and forming a tube 4–6 mm long, unappendaged or with 0–6 pairs of small teeth along the lateral edge, somewhat fleshy, apex expanded into a conspicuous transverse, 2-lobed blade 3–5 mm long, apex emarginate; column ca.2.5 mm long. Stamen 1, adnate to and surrounding the style forming a column. Ovary inferior, 3-carpellate; stigmas 2 on either side of rostellum base.

Fruit: Capsules fusiform; 1–1.5 cm long. Seeds linear; very numerous and extremely minute; embryo minute; Surface translucent and iridescent; the embryo visible through the seed coat. 1.5 mm x 0.2 mm

Ploidy:

Habitat: Usually occurring in dense shade on wet; bryophyte-covered ground or on the lower parts of tree trunks; rarely epiphytic on tree ferns; in wet forest.

Elevation Range: 275–1,710 m.
